The La Jolla Cancer Research Foundation's work in cell biology had expanded over the years to encompass neurological disorders as well as cancers, and had profoundly influenced science nationwide. However, it was still less well-known than neighboring biomedical research centers in Southern California. Lipman Hearne was engaged to guide the Foundation through a name change – the first step in a multi-year effort to position the institution in the minds of a wider audience.
