IIT ranks among the nation’s top private Ph.D.-granting engineering and technology universities. Despite its considerable strengths, IIT had experienced a drop in enrollment during the 1980s and ‘90s, as the number of college-age students declined and student interest shifted away from engineering. To address these challenges, IIT assembled a national commission, which recommended redesigning the curriculum, restructuring the learning environment to better reflect the modern workplace, and enhancing the aging campus and surrounding neighborhood. Lipman Hearne helped articulate these recommendations and market the “new” IIT.
