This prestigious institution—the first public university in the nation—has a long and illustrious history as a progressive force in its home state and throughout the South. It is also recognized as a “public ivy” – a premier public research university providing an exceptional undergraduate education.

In the face of state budget cuts and intense competition from North Carolina’s other public and private institutions, the University needed to better communicate its value to statewide stakeholders ranging from potential students to state legislators. Nationwide, the University aimed to enhance its image as a place of winning athletics and a beautiful campus with a richer depiction of intellectual and research achievements. Last but not least, the University was preparing for a major capital campaign.
