New findings on the dramatic increase of obesity among young adults, ages 17-24, in the U.S. and how it is reducing the pool of healthy young adults available for military service were released this week in "Too Fat to Fight," a report byMission: Readiness. A Lipman Hearne client, Mission: Readiness is a nonprofit, bi-partisan organization that works to ensure continued American security and prosperity into the 21st century by calling for smart investments in the next generation of American children.
Its most recent initiative aims to raise awareness of the national security threat posed by the obesity epidemic. The report “Too Fat to Fight” explains the connection between poor nutrition in our schools, how it leads to obesity, and how that eventually hurts young people if they later decide they want to pursue a military opportunity. Right now obesity is the number one reason the military rejects young people from service.
Lipman Hearne provided strategic counsel to Mission: Readiness on the report and corresponding news conference. Highlights of news coverage include AP, USA Today, PBS Newshour, Washington Post Express, and other national outlets.
