Whether they admit it or not, colleges around the country are checking the web to see how they fared in U.S. News & World Report’s annual “Best Colleges” rankings released this week.

Using its own methodology, the magazine ranks over 1,400 higher education institutions. Grand Canyon University even paid for a banner ad displayed on USNews.com's countdown clock, which ticked away the hours, minutes, and seconds until the new rankings were unveiled online.
