To help fulfill Lipman Hearne’s 2011 mission to contribute to education, Eric Bailey and Megan Cotten, from the Lipman Hearne Washington DC office, spent a day volunteering for Hands On DC. An all-volunteer-run nonprofit, Hands On DC organizes projects to make physical improvements to DC-area schools. This year, the organization’s annual Work-a-thon was held on April 30, and matched 1,539 volunteers with 25 schools.

Shortly after arriving at Raymond Elementary, a K-8 school in Northwest DC’s Georgia Avenue/Petworth Area, Eric and Megan were put to work painting a food pyramid mural in the cafeteria. Now complete, the mural not only brightens the students’ eating space, but also provides a visual guide to making healthy food choices.

Eric and Megan found the experience to be a rewarding opportunity for immersion in the school’s community and with its students and parents. Ultimately, they both came away inspired to get involved with more volunteer projects benefiting education.
