Dr. Rita Cheng, the Chancellor of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, once was a Professor of Accounting. As such, she knew the value that marketing can bring to an organization. “I know the importance of brand and identity in private business and non-profit organizations,” she says. “I had seen other universities that had benefited from strong communications with constituents. That is one of the reasons why I was attracted to Southern Illinois.”

Dr. Cheng became the Chancellor in the summer of 2010, taking over a university that had experienced a steady erosion of students over the prior two decades. “At its height in the early 1990’s, there were 25,000 students. By the late 1990’s it had fallen to 22,000.” And, by 2010, that figure stood at 20,000.
