Since we first began speaking, telling stories has been an effective way to capture attention, engage an audience, and motivate people to act. As technology advances, we are inundated with new tools to help us communicate—Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube to name a few. In our fervor to remain current (and appear professional), however, we often ignore our natural inclination to tell a good story.

But think about it: Is there a more cost-effective way to promote your institution than to tell a memorable story that others can't wait to retell? When you do this in print, in person, or online, you turn on the world's oldest form of viral marketing.

During the past 10 years, I have led storytelling workshops for nonprofits large and small across the United States, and I've heard amazing stories that I (and the others in those workshops) will never forget. Without fail, these stories obey 10 rules that make them both unforgettable and prime candidates for retelling.
