There is a moment—sort of golden hour—that arrives for accomplished high school seniors somewhere between confirming receipt of the last of the college applications and launching the search for a summer job. Aside from a few last AP or International Baccalaureate tests, the 12-year marathon of academic résumé building has reached a finish line. Acceptance letters are rolling in. The power, finally, is theirs. How will they decide? What will they choose?

For enrollment and marketing professionals striving to assemble each new incoming class in an increasingly unpredictable economy, predicting the behavior of these most sought-after students is a challenge. In order to gain deep insight, Lipman Hearne surveyed 1,264 high-achieving seniors nationwide at the critical decision making stage in the 2009 admissions cycle. All had been accepted to at least three colleges and had SAT I V+M scores of 1150 or above; two-thirds scored 1300 or higher, putting them in the top 10 percent of test-takers nationwide. In the research, we categorized these two groups as “solid performers” and “superstars,” and compared findings to a similar study the firm conducted in 2006.
