Carla has over 20 years’ experience working in marketing and communications in both the public and private sectors, with 16 years of direct experience in distance learning planning, marketing, and communications. She most recently worked as the director of university marketing and special assistant to the president at Northern Arizona University and was responsible for integrated marketing efforts that included market research, branding, positioning, and advertising campaigns resulting in overall increases in both nontraditional and traditional student enrollments.
During her tenure at Northern Arizona University, Carla was also involved in writing and developing numerous specialty publications including the university’s 2007 NCA Self-Study document, Educating Arizona (a response to the Arizona Board of Regents redesign of higher education), Enterprise and Education (highlighting entrepreneurialism in higher education), and strategic planning documents.
In addition, Carla led marketing efforts to promote the Arizona Board of Regents initiative known as the Arizona Universities Network (AZUN), involving distance learning representatives from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Arizona to bring online education to the diverse and growing citizenry of Arizona.
Carla’s higher education experience also includes strategic planning and communications for the University of Utah’s media services department and the Utah Education Network (Utah’s higher education consortium). And her work with PBS provided experience in media production and the use of new technologies in innovative teaching and learning practices.
Her private industry experience includes serving as the vice president of a successful software startup in the San Francisco Bay Area (acquired by WebEx) where she worked to promote and support software developed for online corporate training and communications. Other experience includes working for Johnson & Johnson in Miami.
Carla earned a B.S. in Mass Communications from the University of Utah, and a graduate certificate in professional writing and M.A. in English from Northern Arizona University.
