Karen Sloan Lebovich brings to Lipman Hearne’s public relations group more than twenty years of experience in communications, external relations, strategic planning, fundraising, program development, and management. Since joining the firm, Karen has served clients such as RAND, Albright College, the American Diploma Project, the National Center on Education Statistics of the U.S. Department of Education, The College of New Jersey, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and The Sage Colleges.

Prior to joining Lipman Hearne, she served as director of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation, directing its research, fellowship and grants, and development programs, as well as overseeing the Foundation’s $120 million in assets. She also served as the Foundation’s spokesperson. Under her leadership, the Foundation awarded more than $3.3 million annually in fellowships and grants for women and girls, and expanded its portfolio of research.

A veteran of academia, government, and the nonprofit sector, Karen has played key leadership roles in a wide range of organizations. As the former senior communications executive at American University, she directed a comprehensive publications, marketing, and communications program. She also served as Director of Public Affairs for the National Science Foundation and directed Public Affairs and Communications for the League of Women Voters and its Education Fund. While at the League, Karen was instrumental in planning and directing national media and marketing for the 1980 and 1984 Presidential Debates, helping to catapult this historic grassroots advocacy and educational organization to national prominence.

Karen’s community service included chairing the Board of Trustees of the Broadcasters Child Development Center. For her work, she received the District of Columbia City Council’s Distinguished Service Award in 1991.

Karen was selected to give the commencement address at Ashland University in Ohio in May 2000. She received her B.A. with distinction from Simmons College in Boston and pursued graduate work in public administration at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
